Montana Gold and Silver Mining Company

From 1864 to 1866, Benjamin Christenot amassed some 87 mining properties in Alder Gulch. Investors had been found in the form of the Montana Gold & Silver Mining Company (MGSM), a Pennsylvania Corporation chartered in January 1865. On April 4, 1866, those mining properties were conveyed to MGSM by Benjamin and his wife, Janie, in a quadripartite agreement for $1,140,000.

Benjamin travelled to Philadelphia in the spring of 1866, where the agreement with the Montana Gold & Silver Mining Company was signed. MGSM purchased crushing machinery and other equipment, which was sent by the steamship Nile from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Nebraska City, Nebraska, then overland by ox train to the mill site in Spring Creek. The equipment arrived on October 4, 1866, and by January 28, 1867, the mill began operation.
